Rick Light

Skateboard Kid

Before the apocalypse and zombie crisis arrived, Rick’s life was as passionate and free as the summer sun. He was the most famous skateboarder in town, conquering every ramp and rail with dazzling tricks. Yet he was also the rebellious younger brother who constantly gave his sister, Janet, headaches. Rick enjoyed his unrestrained life, but deep down, Janet was his only support. The day disaster struck, there were neither fierce winds nor heavy rain. It was just like any other regular weekend. Rick accompanied Janet to the large shopping mall in the city center for a casual stroll, when suddenly, screams and crowds fleeing in all directions shattered the joyful atmosphere. A horde of hideous zombies poured into the mall. Realizing the danger instantly, Rick tried to grab Janet’s hand and run outside, but the crowd separated them. While anxiously searching for his sister, he saw a little girl who had been separated from her family, fall to the ground, about to be overtaken by zombies. In that moment, he barely hesitated—he dashed over on his skateboard, skillfully knocking zombies aside and quickly pulling the girl up. He carved out a path through the chaotic crowd and zombie horde, leading the girl and other trapped people toward the mall exit. Just as they were about to escape, fate struck again. Another wave of zombies surged in from the side, scattering them. Rick was pushed forward by the crowd, and when he looked back, he saw the little girl fall again, her figure instantly swallowed by the onrushing zombies. He wanted to go back, but the tide of people and zombies made it impossible; in the end, he was swept out of the mall in endless chaos. Rick stood outside the mall, surrounded by the screams and cries of survivors, while a crushing sense of guilt overwhelmed him. Not only had he failed to save the child, but he had also lost his only family—his sister Janet. The immense feeling of failure left him cold all over; even when his beloved skateboard slipped from his hand and hit the ground, he barely noticed. Just as he was sinking into despair, thinking he had lost everything, a small figure suddenly darted out from the side of the crowd and hugged his leg tightly. “Big brother, thank you for saving me…” Rick looked down in disbelief and saw that safe, unharmed face. Immediately after, he looked up sharply and saw Janet—whom he thought he had lost, or even feared dead—walking out from behind the girl, holding a spray paint can. Her face was filled with relief as she looked at him.
